Islam News – TIKRIT, Iraq (Reuters) reported – Two rockets hit a small oil refinery in northern Iraq on Sunday, A spokesman for the state-run Northern Refineries Co told Iraq’s state news agency.
Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on the group’s official channel, stating two Katyusha rockets were fired at the Siniya refinery.
According to officials, operations were halted as a safety measure to prevent further damage.
“We completely shut down production units to avoid extensive damage that could result,” a chief engineer at the refinery told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
There were no reports of causalities.
An oil ministry statement said firefighters managed to extinguish the fire and the operations are to be resumed in “the next few hours after assessing the damage”.
